Abstarct: In this research, hydrological and environmental studies were preformed in order to
investigate the effects of toxic mextals discharged from the heap leaching No. 3 of
Sarcheshmeh copper mine by sampling in heap acidic leachate and water from Shour
River, and analysing them. The results of chemical analysis of the samples and field
observations show that the concentrations of many toxic mextals in downstream of the Shour River
are very high which are harmful for the environment. Furthermore, a few samples were taken
from different depths at three points on a low grade waste dump in the study area in order
to investigate pyrite oxidation and pollution generation problem. The samples were
analysed using the atomic absorption method to determine the fraction of pyrite remained
within the waste particles. A numerical finite volume model using PHOENICS as a
computational fluid dynamic (CFD) package has been developed to simulate pyrite
oxidation and pollution generation in the selected waste dump. The results of such
investigations can be used for proposing an effective environmental management
program in order to control the pollutants and acidic leachate in the vicinity of heap
leaching structures and low grade waste dumps. The meteorological conditions to gather
with the hydrological characteristics of the areas of heap leaching structures are the major
parameters can considerably affect the operational efficiency of heap leaching structures.
These parameters necessarily should be taken into account before designing a heap
structure. To achieve the goal, the meteorological data collected from the Sarcheshmeh
station were used. The temperature changes, daily precipitation and annual precipitation
in the study area were evaluated and analysed using these statistical data.
