The importance of the existence of oxide laxyer on the surface of Zr-1%Nb alloy is a function of manufacturing process and the intended application. Previous research has revealed that the availability of this oxide laxyer on the surface of some of produced parts with the mentioned material, will provide characteristics such as increased corrosion strength, modified mechanical properties on the surface of parts, modified wear behavior, and finally modification of part's function in operation. From this perspective in the current research, survey has been done on the effects of manufacturing processes on creating and growing oxide laxyers with the aim of modifying the function of Zr-1%Nb alloy. The intended oxide laxyer has created using the oxide heat treatment cycle on the alloy.
In order to investigate the structure and the quality of produced laxyers, various analysis such as SEM, nano- hardness, EDS, and GI-XRD has been utilized. Fram the phase analysis perspective, GI-XRD has shown that the produced laxyer after heat treatment in 580 0C temperature, and vacuum atmosphere and oxidation in 540 0C in 20 minutes time duration, could create tetragonal with monoclinic phases of Zirconium oxide on the surface laxyer. From the nano- mechanical behavior, the results derived from nano- hardness test will prove the better quality of the mentioned oxide laxyer. Because higher hardness, wear, and pitting resistance of oxide laxyer with lower friction. coefficient in comparison to non- modified sample has been observed. It is necessary to note that the thickness of created oxide laxyer is about 5 micrometers. The summary of the presented results shows that the indicated thermal oxidation treatment is a suitable condition for the parts that are subject to the phenomenon of wear and corrosion at high temperature (400 0C).
