Abstarct: Groundwater pollution due to saline water intrusion is one of problems in desert and coastal areas. Location of Damghan in vicinity of Haj Ali Gholi desert causes to have saline water intrusion into Damghan fresh water aquifers in different places resulted in reduction of water quality. To evaluate the saline water intrusion from the desert into Hosseinabad-e-Doolab aquifer in Damghan area, and to determine the depth and interface of saline-fresh water, resistivity data acquisition, modeling and interpretation have been made. The locations of sounding and profiling surveys among the water wells have been determined considering the information, especially electrical conductivity (EC) of water wells. The electrical sounding survey has been made to determine the subsurface geoelectrical laxyers and some physical and geometrical specifications of the groundwater aquifer. When the saline and fresh ground waters are adjacent, due to flowing of fresh water to saline water, their interface is not horizontal. Thus, to determine the depth of the interface between the fresh water and saline water more accurately, we have carried out the resistivity profiling surveys using the Wenner array. The resistivity sounding data have been modeled and interpreted using standard and auxiliary curves and also IX1D and IPI2WIN software packages. Interpretation of resistivity profiling data has also been made with the help of RES2DINV and ZondRes2d. The interpretation results indicate somewhat the depth of saline water. the amount of salts existed above the aquifer, i.e. in surface and subsurface soils, have been increased. The EC values of samples obtained from the mixture of soil and water with the ration of 1 to 5, respectively, have been measured to investigate the salinity amount of the soil. The results indicate the moderate salinity in the soil that confirms the interpretation results of resistivity sounding and profiling surveys. Due to having lower electrode separations of the Wenner array in survey line A in respect to survey line B, the penetration depth along the survey line A is comparatively lower. The resistivity cross sections indicate different salinity zones. The obtained resistivity results are in good agreement with the EC results from the water wells and indicate the saline water intrusion into the groundwater. To impede the saline water intrusion, extraction management of water from the wells is obviously necessary.
