TN1203 : Automatic Seismic Interpretation of Mud Diapirs with the Expert Systems

Automated interpretation of seismic data is a practical and valuable method in geophysical studies, particularly in the exploration of hydrocarbon resources. The complexity of geological structures, the reflectors of subsurface waves, and the vast knowledge associated with the decision-making process in seismic data interpretation have always made this task challenging. The use of an expert system as a knowledge-baxsed system in the interpretation of seismic data can help mitigate this problem. An expert system is a knowledge-baxsed system that applies its knowledge using complex equations in a specific domain. This system identifies logical patterns on which an expert baxses their decisions and then makes decisions in a manner similar to manual calculations baxsed on an interpreter's opinions.
This study evaluates the complex structures of mud diapirs in the southeast of the Caspian Sea using an expert system. The southern Caspian Basin is one of the richest regions in terms of oil and gas reservoirs, and the Gorgan Plain, as a part of it, with its numerous mud diapirs and mud volcanoes, which are indicative of hydrocarbon reserves, was selected for study.
The process of designing the expert system for identifying mud diapirs on seismic sections was modeled in two approaches: manual seismic data interpretation and automated interpretation. In the first approach, the expert's experience with manual interpretation of training data was collected and used to create the knowledge baxse and inference engine in the expert system in the second approach. The validation phase confirmed the accuracy of this method with an average precision of 90.1%, considering the minimal knowledge used to develop the ANFIS expert system's knowledge baxse. This method can be utilized in other studies and subsurface explorations of hydrocarbon resources.
