TN1150 : Feasibility study of producing geo-polymer cement from several types of mining and industrial wastes: An Environmental Approach

Abstarct: Increasing the need of mining materials and energy resources accompanies raise of mining and industrial wastes especially wastes produced by conventional cement plants and mines. To solve these issues, one of the best approach recently, is recycling the wastes among manufacturing geo-polymer cements. In this thesis, feasibility study of producing geo-polymer cement with the use of coal fly ash, red mud, rice husk ash and calcium carbonate is studied. First 22 mixture designs were presented by Design Expert software and for each design, 5 geo-polymer samples and then, other 28 mixture designs (with 5 samples per design) were made and prepared for determining 28-days curing uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). The UCS results of the second set were better than the fist and consequently, analysises of FE-SEM, XRD, and Raman were conducted for the samples of the second set characterized by maximum, median and minimum compressive strengths and the results were recorded. The best UCS obtained from the tests was 11.52 Mpa. According to this UCS geo-polymer cements produced in this study possibly have a potential to replace Portland cement and get used in some industrial constructional projects. Furthermore, prediction model displayed by the software possessed a significant accuracy, and the regression equation suggested by the software, illustrates the has a significant negative effect on UCS of the samples.
