Abstarct: In power systems, the majority of electrical loads are inductive that require reactive power of the grid. According to variable requirement of power system to reactive power, parallel capacitor banks must be constantly connected and disconnected which requires continues switching in power system. An inrush current is created, when switching is done in parallel capacitor banks, which can cause the overcurrent relay to fail. Another factor that can cause the downstream network capacitor bank's overcurrent relay to malfunction is the inrush current caused by the switching of the upstream network capacitor bank, which is known as the magnification phenomenon. In this thesis, a new method for detection inrush current due to isolated and back-to-back switching of parallel capacitor bank and magnification phenomenon, and normal current from short circuit fault current is proposed baxsed on the support vector machine, which the Teager energy operator is used to extract suitable features for classification. Different disturbances are simulated in Qazvin 230/63 Kv substation and Qazvin 1 63/20 Kv substation in Zanjan Regional Electrical Company to evaluate the performance of the proposed method without and with noise. The simulation results show the appropriate performance of proposed method in noisy and non-noisy conditions.
