Abstarct: In this thesis, a new structure for permanent magnet hysteresis synchronous (PMHS) motor is introduced. Considering the characteristics of the hysteresis and permanent magnet (PM) motors, it seems that these two motors are complements of each other. Thus, their combination yields a motor with an excellent performance. In order to preserve the major advantages of the both motors in the new motor, a disc type slotless structure is chosen. Moreover, this report presents a new analytical and finite element method for modelling of the PMHS motor. In the analytical modelling method, mathematical equations are obtained by using Ampere’s circuital law, flux continuity law and Faraday’s law by which the air-gap voltage and exciting current of the motor can be evaluated. To implement this method, a new iterative algorithm is proposed. This algorithm consists of one iteration loop for each input voltage to find the maximum flux density of the operational hysteresis loop of the motor. In the finite element modelling method a new iterative algorithm is used. To implement this method a programming software has been lixnked to finite element software because of its limitation in modelling of hysteresis phenomena. Furthermore, this study presents a new design algorithm that allows user to determine the present of combination of the hysteresis and PM motors in the new hybrid motor. Validity of the proposed methods is checked by experimental results. A reasonable close agreement between the two is obtained and good performance of PMHS motor is verified.
