Abstarct: Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) play an important role in aviation and shipbuilding industry. This type of motor has a high ratio of power to volume which makes it appropriate for use in airplanes and submarines. Therefore, optimal design and operation improvement of this machine is of an active area of research. PMSM operation depends on various factors such as design parameters and their change over time and load torque. Speed control of PMSM is challenging and needs inputs such as load torque, reference speed and stator currents. The output variables are generated torque, mechanical speed and rotor flux. Conventional methods are not appropriate for designing the speed control system in vast range of operation. Nowadays, intelligent control systems are capable of designing nonlinear complex systems. In this thesis, intelligent control tools are employed for design and development of PMSM. Different control methods such as classic PID, linearized feedback, sliding mode control method and the novel intelligent method baxsed on Brain Emotional Learning baxsed Intelligent Controller (BELBIC) are applied to PMSM and obtained results are analyzed. Simulation results show that BELBIC method outperforms other methods. Moreover, primary control objectives such as speed and position control are met. Secondary control goals such as minimization of torque ripple are simultaneously achieved. As BELBIC controller sound operation is sensitive to accurate values of controller parameters, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used to optimally find these values. BELBIC acting as a critic which minimizes the stress caused by neuro-fuzzy controller and thus proves to be a prominent intelligent nonlinear controller with adjustable parameters.
