Abstarct: Permanent Magnet Brushless DC motors with trapezoidal back Electromotive Force
waveform are increasingly being used in high performance applications due to their
superior properties such as their high efficiency, compact structure, high torque, high
reliability, and lower maintenance over the conventional motors. This motors are
commonly used in three-phase form, using three-phase BLDC motors in sensitive
industries, requires improving the functional characteristic performance of this motors.
Various strategies such as modified control methods or increases the number of stator
phases, offered to improve the performance of this motors. the multi-phase BLDC motor
is considered as a good candidate for military application such as a propulsion system in
warships. a BLDC motor with higher number of phase has several advantages compare
to the conventional three-phase BLDC motors; It can reduce the torque, speed ripple and
the stator current per phase, increase the power density and reliability in fault tolerant.
In this paper, a twelve-phase BLDC motor simulated in abc frxame therefore The
Functional characteristics of this motor extracted by direct speed control in current
control method by use of fuzzy logic and compared to a similar three-phase BLDC
motor. As results of This comparison identified, reduction of torque ripple , speed ripple
and the stator current amplitude per phase and increasing the fault tolerant feature when
one or more phases failed in twelve phase BLDC motor.
