TJ954 : Analysis of the effect of test parameters and fabrication method on fatigue life of a control arm fabricated by sheet mextal forming method

Abstarct: Today, cars play a fundamental role as widely used means of transportation in people's daily lives. Ensuring the safe performance of car parts is important since they are interconnected through various joints and affected by numerous dynamic and oscillatory stresses. The triangular bracket made of HR60 is one of the components in the car's suspension system, functioning to connect the engine subfrxame to the wheel hub. To investigate the impact of testing and manufacturing parameters, a finite element simulation model was first developed. Then, the results of this simulation were validated using experimental strain measurement tests. After confirming the accuracy of the simulation, a numerical fatigue analysis was performed using software, and its results were compared with those of the experimental fatigue tests. The stress values in the crack region from the simulation and experimental tests were 171 and 168 megapascals, respectively, while the strain values in this region were 0.00083 and 0.000081, respectively. The alignment between the simulation data and the experimental tests indicated the accuracy and validity of the simulation. Subsequently, the effects of significant parameters on the component's lifespan were examined. To investigate the impact of the fit between the bushings and the triangular bracket, three values 0.15, 0.21, and 0.3 millimeters were selected for this fit. The results showed that the endurance limits in the crack region were 112, 99, and 103 megapascals, respectively. Therefore, it can be stated that the optimal press fit is 0.22 millimeters. The effects of other parameters on the component's lifespan were also examined, including edge effects, surface quality, manufacturing methods, and the type of fixture.
