Hybrid thermodynamic-solar systems are an effective solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent environmental degradation. These systems increase overall efficiency while reducing energy consumption. Solar energy is one of the cleanest and most widely available sources of energy in the world, making it an ideal choice for powering thermodynamic cycles. Air dehumidifier systems are a necessary component in the air conditioning industry, and liquid dryer dehumidifier systems are a more energy-efficient option compared to other methods.
The purpose of this thesis is to present and evaluate a dehumidifier system that uses a lithium chloride liquid desiccant. The system is powered by solar energy to regenerate the desiccant solution. The energy needed to regenerate the solution is generated through a photovoltaic-thermal pre-heating unit and a main heating unit that uses solar thermal collectors.
The photovoltaic-thermal system uses a desiccant solution as its working fluid. To transfer heat from the photovoltaic cells to the desiccant solution, an aluminum cooling plate with a spiral tube configuration is used and placed under the photovoltaic plate. To test the temperature of the cells and the output solution in different weather conditions, Comsol Multiphysics software was used for a computational fluid dynamics-heat transfer analysis. This study also compared the power consumption of a steam compression system with the proposed desiccant system, to perform the same process in air. The results show that the performance of the proposed system is more suitable than the steam compression system.
To change the temperature of dry bubble air inlet with 29.7°C and containing moisture of 16.5 g/g to steam with 11.9 g/kg and a temperature of 28.7°C, a compression system with an energy consumption of 22.3 kW is required. The compressor has a power of 4.05 kW and there is also a heating power involved. The total energy consumption of fans and pumps is deducted from the production of photovoltaic cells in the system. The system uses 2129 units of electric energy, and the thermal and electrical efficiency of the photovoltaic-thermal unit is 42.75% and 15.87% respectively. The amount of water absorption in the system was calculated to be 1.53 g/m.
According to the results of economic studies, the cost of producing dry air is uniform and amounts to 0.006 and 0.015 dollars for interest rates of 10% and 15%, respectively. The cost of air is uniform too, and it amounts to 1.32 and 3.36 dollars by weight for interest rates of 10% and 15%, respectively.
