Fiber mextal laminates (FMLs) are a new group of composites, made of mextal
sheets with thin thickness and reinforced composite laxyers with different
fibers. FMLs have high properties of mextals and composites. They can
be used with a different type of mextal alloys, fiber and resin
types, several laxyers and various orientations of fibers. Some of the best
characteristics of fiber mextal laminates can be attributed to high resistance to
corrosion and chemical environments, high impact resistance to aluminum,
superior fatigue properties to mextals, resistance to high flame retardant high
to weight ratio. In this study, the effect of adding nano clays into the epoxy
resin of the core of FMLs on buckling and flexural behaviour of FMLs
reinforced with natural fibers has been investigated. FMLs were made of
2024 aluminum alloys and 828 epoxy resin with theta hardener and
natural kenaf fibers in the form of two-way fabric and modified
Montmorillonite clay nano particles with values of 0, 3, 5 and 7%.
The results show that the flexural and buckling strength of the FML increase
by adding different amounts of clay nano particles to the matrix. baxsed
on the results of the experimental tests, the samples containing 5wt % nano
particles obtained the highest compressive and flexural strength among
other samples. Also, in order to investigate the distribution of clay nano
particles in the matrix and its effect on strength and adhesion between the
composite core and the aluminum laxyer of the surfaces, morphology was
performed on the samples and scanning electron images were compared.
Finally, the experimental results were compared with those of Abaqus finite
element simulation software.
