TA868 : Removal of Heavy mextals and Turbidity from Drilling Mud Using Coagulation and Flocculation Process

Abstarct: The removal of heavy mextals and reduction of turbidity in drilling mud are critical issues in oil and gas operations, as releasing untreated mud can lead to severe environmental impacts. In this study, the effects of the coagulation and flocculation process on the removal of heavy mextals (Pb and Zn) and turbidity reduction were investigated in drilling mud samples collected from three distinct points: the Mud Pit, Shale Shaker, and Flow Line. The physicochemical properties of the samples, including turbidity, pH, electrical conductivity, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), and CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), were measured to establish the baxseline conditions for each sample. The results demonstrated that the coagulation and flocculation process possesses high efficiency in removing mextals and suspended solids; the removal rates for Pb ranged between 77% and 89%, while Zn removal was recorded between 79% and 88%. Furthermore, the turbidity of the Mud Pit sample was significantly reduced from 770 NTU to 150 NTU. Data analysis indicated that the sampling location and initial mextal concentrations play a vital role in removal efficiency, with samples characterized by stable flow and moderate concentrations showing the highest performance. These findings suggest that implementing coagulation and flocculation is an effective and practical method for treating drilling mud and mitigating environmental impacts, playing a significant role in improving industrial waste management.
