TA867 : Evaluation of the reuse of wastewater from the Numaniyah City Wastewater Treatment Plant in Iraq for different users

Abstarct: Water scarcity and the declining flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have posed serious challenges to water resource management in Iraq. In this context, the reuse of treated urban wastewater as an unconventional water source is considered a strategic solution for water sustainability. This study aims to evaluate the quality of effluent from the Al-Numaniyah wastewater treatment plant and select the optimal reuse application (agriculture, industry, urban green space, and aquifer recharge). This research is descxriptive-analytical in nature and was conducted using a mixed approach. In the first step, physical, chemical, and microbial parameters of the effluent were monitored over a period and compared with national and international standards. In the second step, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a survey of 15 local experts, criteria (technical, economic, environmental, health) were weighted, and alternatives were ranked. Laboratory results indicated that the mean pH (7.4) and total suspended solids (33 mg/L) are within the optimal range, while BOD₅ (28 mg/L) and coliform levels are at the borderline of environmental standards, requiring continuous monitoring. The AHP model results revealed that the "Health-Social" criterion, with a weight of 41.5%, is the most critical decision-making priority from the experts' perspective. In the final ranking of alternatives, "Agricultural Irrigation" was selected as the superior option with a final score of 0.376, followed by industrial uses (0.271) and urban green space (0.225). The aquifer recharge option was ranked last due to the high risk of groundwater contamination. baxsed on the findings, the effluent from the Al-Numaniyah treatment plant has high potential for "Restricted Agricultural Irrigation" (non-food and industrial crops). This option, while being economically and technically feasible, is compatible with the current quality conditions of the effluent (presence of nutrients and moderate salinity). It is recommended to install supplementary disinfection systems and sand filtration at the plant outlet to enhance the safety factor.
