TA804 : Evaluation of the effect of different defrost cycles on the creep and self-healing behavior of asphalt mixtures containing steel slag and cast iron slag

Cold weather conditions and ice formation on roads are a serious challenge in road construction, reducing safety and increasing costs. Traditional methods such as salt spraying have negative environmental impacts, while new technologies such as microwave deicing and self-healing asphalts offer more sustainable solutions. This study investigated the improvement of mechanical and environmental properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA) using steel slag and cast iron slag as aggregates. The tested samples contained different percentages of steel slag and cast iron (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100) and tests such as Marshall, static creep, semicircular bending and microwave deicing were performed to evaluate the performance. In the static creep test, the sample containing 100% steel slag and 60% cast iron slag showed a decrease in settlement of 71% and 39%, respectively. After one defrost cycle, the settlement of the samples containing 100% steel slag and 40% cast iron slag decreased by 67% and 47%, respectively, compared to the control sample. In the second cycle, these values showed a decrease of 61% and 36%, respectively. In the semicircular bending test, the recovery index of the samples containing 60% steel slag increased by 223% and 154% in the first and second cycles, respectively. The samples containing 40% cast iron slag also showed an improvement in this index by 54% and 42%, respectively. The microwave defrost test showed that the samples containing 60% steel slag and 40% cast iron slag had better defrosting performance. The steel slag also reduced the defrosting time. This research showed that the use of steel slag and cast iron slag, in addition to reducing the consumption of natural resources and managing industrial waste, offers a sustainable and economical solution to increase the durability of asphalt against environmental conditions. This combination can develop frost-resistant infrastructure.
