Abstarct: Abstract By raising the importance of passive defense and increasing the chance of imposed and unwanted wars, it is necessary to design blast-resistance structures such as excavations, to reduce the economic and human damages. At this time, retaining walls are the most common structures facing danger in excavations. An explosion may occur in front of the retaining wall or on the surface of the soil behind the wall or even the explosion load could be embedded in the soil. The aim of this study was to investigate the damage rate imposed to the concrete retaining wall due to the location of the explosion; in this regard, the advanced model of “modified Johnson Holmquist” had been used for simulating concrete, and the explosion had been modeled in coupled eulerian-Lagrangian mode. This study shows that the explosion in the soil mass behind the wall has the most damage to the retaining walls while the surface explosions have the lowest damage. By increasing the height and thickness of the retaining wall, we will reduce the severity of the damages and destroys of the wall. With the wall’s thickness increasing, the destroyed elements will decrease. At the same time, we face more surface damages that could be quickly rebuilt.
