Abstarct: Most of problems encountered in structural engineering deals with solving partial differential equations which generally is not an easy task. In the last few decades, several methods have been suggested for solving these equations where the finite elements, finite difference, boundary elements and meshfree methods are amongst the most common. Recently, the so named ‘Isogeometrical Analysis’ method was suggested and since then many researchers have been trying to overcome the difficulties of the method.
In this research, after introducing the isogeometrical method in general, its formulation for the plane stress/strain case is presented and further developed for the axisymmetrical problems. This is followed by developing a computer program, especifically for the solution of axisymmetric problems, given the name IsoOptimizer. This program enables user to solve axisymmetric problems with the Isogeometrical method.
To verify the performance of the developed program, a few examples were taken into consideration and the obtained results were compared with the analytical solution as well as the results of the ANSYS software. It is shown that the results of the developed computer program are in a very good agreement with the exact and finite element solutions.
In the next step, the developed tool was employed for structural shape optimization of the axisymmetric problems. For this purpose, the DOT mathematical programming subroutines were used. To demonstrate the performance of the method, a few examples are presented in Chapter 5.
