Abstarct: Nowadays, the application of antioxidants and plant growth regulators has been discussed for decreasing the negative effect of different stresses. Methanol and sodium nitroprosside have been substance caused which the resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. To evaluate the effect of methanol and sodium nitroprosside foliar application on some traits of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) a field experiment was carried out in split plot factorial baxsed on randonrized complete block in 3 replications 2014 at the Shahrood University of Technology. Two levels of irrigations, including 8 days interval (well watered) and 16 days interval (water deficit stress) were in main plot, and foliar application of methanol in 3 levels (0, 15 and 30% w/w) and foliar application of sodium nitroprusside in 3 levels (0, 50 and 100 μM) were in sub plot. In this experiment water deficit stress reduced leaf area, leaf, stem and capitol dry weight, capitol diameter, seed weight, number of seeds in capitol, seed yield, chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll. The water deficit stress decreased relative water content (RWC) and membrane Electerical Conductivity (EC). The number of hollow seeds per capitol increased in stress conditions (16 days). (RWC) and (EC) were some of traits that significantly increased by use of sodium nitroprosside. Percent of protein and seed oil increased by use this substance in its high level (100 μM) in order 2.58 percent and 6.19 percent respectively. The result showed that the application 100 µM sodium nitroprosside concentration and 15% by volume methanol concentration contained increased 25 percent seed weight and reduced the number of hollow seeds per capitol to size 14 seed of 34/03 percent. Seed yield increased by use Foliar sodium nitroprusside with tow concentration 50 and 100 μM in order 8/26 percent and 19/07 percent in stress conditions compared with control. Foliar application of sodium nitroprosside and methanol could greatly improve the harmpul effect of irrigation stress, and finally in the range of this research can introduced intraction of 100 µM sodium nitroprosside 15% by volume methanol as a best combinined treatment.
