QE591 : Geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and genesis of titanium deposit in south of Sabzevar

Abstarct: The south Sabzevar titanium deposit is located about 55 km south of Sabzevar, in Khorasan Razavi Province, near the Arian and Mohammadabad villages. This area is a small part of the Sabzevar subzone in the north of Central Iran. The Middle-Late Eocene sedimentary sequence in this area, from oldest to newest, includes conglomerate-sandstone, marly-conglomerate-limestone-sandstone, limestone-marly-sandstone, marly, and marly-sandstone-conglomerate units. Among this, the marly-conglomerate-limestone-sandstone unit (E1m,c,l,s) is composed of green marl with interlaxyers of sandstone, microconglomerate, limestone, and sandy limestone. One of the mineral characteristics of this sedimentary unit is the presence of titanium- and iron-bearing minerals in the sandstone horizons. The sandstone are divided into fine-, medium- and coarse-grained types in terms of texture and are placed in the lithic arkose and feldspathic litharnite groups baxsed on the percentages of quartz (30 to 45%), feldspar (15 to 30%) and rock fragments (15 to 45%) and were deposited in a medium to high energy depositional environment. baxsed on the Miall method (Miall, 1996) and lithology, sedimentary structures, geometric form, bedding surfaces, paleoflow patterns and fossil traces factors, three groups of lithofacies have been identified in this sedimentary sequence: gravel and coarse-grained (Gmm and Gcm), sandy and medium-grained (Sh and Sr), and mud and fine-grained (Fl).
In sandstone horizons, Ti- and Fe-bearing minerals are observed as stratiform (the dominant form of deposit), lenses, disseminated forms. The thickness of Ti- and Fe- rich horizons varies from millimeters, centimeters to laxyers more than one meter thick. Oxide minerals in sandstones include titanomagnetite, ilmenite, magnetite, hematite and goethite, among this titanomagnetite is main ore mineral. The study of the chemistry of oxide minerals from sandstones also shows their average chemical composition to be titanomagnetite. TiO₂ values of 12.87 wt% to 20.75 wt% (average 15.89%) and Fe₂O₃ values from 39.99% to 64.68% indicate the important of titanium and iron mineralization and their economic value in the sandstones in south of Sabzevar. The similarity of the geochemical distribution pattern of minor, trace, and rare earth elements in Ti- and Fe-bearing sandstone with those of intermediate-mafic igneous rocks (diorite, monzodiorite, and monzogabbro) and the presence of significant amounts of titanomagnetite and magnetite in the composition of these igneous rocks indicate that the possible origin and parent rock of titanium-iron minerals in the sandstone are diorite, monzodiorite, and monzogabbro in the south of Sabzevar. These intrusive rocks are outcropped in the form of stocks, dikes and sills (mostly in the form of sills) among the Late Cretaceous volcanic-sedimentary sequences outside the study area in southern Sabzevar. baxsed on the findings of the present study, the southern Sabzevar titanium deposit is a stratabound paleoplacer deposit which precipitated in the fluvial and shallow coastal environments during the Middle-Late Eocene.
