Abstarct: Gorgan plain with an area of 4727 square kilometers, located in the catchment area of Gorganrood- Gharehsou, is one of the largest plains in the Iran. This plain is one of the most important agricultural plains that excessive withdrawals of groundwater resources, causing a large drop in the groundwater level of the plain, especially in some locations. The aim of this study was to identify areas with large drop in groundwater level and provide solutions to overcome or compensate such a prablem. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to check the groundwater level in the plain and drawing the relevant charts and maps such as map of equipotential drop of groundwater level. Thirty-year survey of groundwater level (1983- 2013) in 289 piezometers with complete data and distribution from 310 pizometers existing the plain, showed that the groundwater levels in Gorgan plain has a discending trend from 1983 to 2001, such that the groundwater levels have dropped about 12.32 meters in the mentioned period. But again, the groundwater level gradually increased since 2001 and a large portion of groundwater decline has been recovered. Finally, given the general trend of groundwater level between 1983 to 2013, a relatively small drop with the amount of about one meter, observed that illustrates a balance in the groundwater level in the region for a long period. However, some parts of which after 2001 also continued their downward trend and include now a large drop in groundwater level, so that they can be called as critical point in terms of groundwater levels in Gorgan plain. Most of these points located in the southern half of the plain and areas with a focus on agriculture and therefore a heavy pumping can be stated as the reason of large drop in groundwater level. Finally, several strategies, including artificial recharge in the short term through injection wells and rrecharge channels, have been suggested to solve the problem of large drop in these points.
