Abstarct: The Vartaveh iron deposit located in 25 km south of Kashan city and 8 km southeast of Ghamsar, in the Urumieh-Dokhtar volcano-plutonic belt. The dominant cropped out rock units in the area involve Eocene volcano-sedimentary rocks and a post Early (Middle?) Miocene dioritic-quartz dioritic intrusion. The ore dominantly contain magnetite, which in parts is associated with hematite and sulfide minerals involving pyrite and chalcopyrite, and some secondary minerals such as malachite, limonite, goethite and manganese oxides. Ore textures are massive, brecciaed, vein-veinlets and disseminated. Major wall rock alterations are chloritic, epidotic, sericitic, and argillic. Geochemical studies indicate a calc-alkaline and mexta-alumina and a magmatic arc-related nature for the intrusion. In overall, field studies, structure and textures, mineralogical, alteration and geochemical studies, and investigating of relationship between the intrusion, host rocks and mineralization, shows that iron mineralization in the Vartaveh area is of skarn-type. So, intruding of the dioritic-quarz dioritic body into the calcareous tuffs caused iron mineralization. The faults, joints and fractures had an important role for conduction of the ore fluids. Fluid inclusion study indicates salinity of ore fluids as 5.40-15.78 wt% NaCl in calcite and 7.16-10.64 wt% in quartz and average of 9.56 wt% NaCl. This study also shows temperature of homogenization of fluid inclusions as 150-289 °C in calcite and 274-310 °C in quartz. Processing of mineral chemistry data on garnet from the skarns indicate andradite and grossular, belonging to iron skarn fields. By integrating data from all the above studies, a calcic skarn-type formation is proposed for the Vartaveh deposit. Furthermore, some mineralogical, textural, structural and geochemical evidences also indicate some similarities of the Vartaveh deposit to the iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits.
