Abstarct: Graphitic carbon, as an anode, is one of the primary raw materials in the aluminum production process, which is produced through the electrolysis of alumina powder using pre-baked anodes. Carbon anodes, composed of petroleum coke, coal tar pitch, and batts, are baked in a furnace at the final stage. In this research, the raw materials for anodes were investigated, and after grinding and proper sizing of the raw materials, a green anode sample was produced using batts from Iran Alumina Company. Qualitative and chemical analyses of the batts from Iran Alumina Company were conducted to assess the feasibility of producing carbon anode blocks. Other analyses included X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and thermal analyses (TGA and DSC). The results showed that there is a similar morphology and close elemental composition between the butts and the carbon anode, with strong graphite structures observed in the butts. The butts, like the anode, have irregular structures and uneven surfaces. The crystalline particle size in the butts was measured at 85 nanometers. The butts may exhibit higher electrochemical activity than the anode and have slightly higher-than-standard values for elements like vanadium and sodium, which could impact the properties of the anode. Qualitative analyses showed that the batts possess adequate density, compressive strength, and acceptable thermal conductivity, but their high reactivity with air and slightly lower flexural strength than the standard require improvement. Furthermore, thermal analyses demonstrated that the anodes made from the batts of Iran Alumina Company show suitable stability at temperatures below 500°C. This research concluded that the batts from Iran Alumina Company have the potential for recycling and reuse in the production of carbon anodes, but process optimization is necessary to improve the final quality.
