Abstarct: Nano Zirconia is currently attracting considerable interest as support material in a variety of catalytic systems. In most of the cases, this interest can be ascribed to at least one of the following two properties of zirconia: (i) as a carrier, it gives rise to an unique kind of interaction between the active phase and support, this being manifested in both the catalytic activity and selectivity of the system; and (ii) it is more chemically inert than the classical supports (Al2O3 and SiO2). In this work, sol-gel derived nano-zirconia has been covalently functionalized by refluxing with (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane in toluene. Then, it was refluxed with ethylenediamine and triethylamine in CH3CN for replacing chlorine atom with an amine by elimination of HCl. Amine functionalized zirconia, then was refluxed in a solution of VO(acac)2 in CH3CN and mextalated catalyst, VO(acac)2 supported on nano-zirconia was prepared. CHN and ICP analysis showed that the amount of nitrogen and vanadium loading on this support are 1.63 and 0.92 mmol/g, respectively. The functionalized zirconia was also characterized by FT-IR, GC and TGA technique.
