Abstarct: The present research investigates the design, implementation, and effectiveness of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) syllabuses in Iranian universities. The study examines their alignment with the academic and professional needs of students across five major academic fields: Humanities, Engineering, Medical Sciences, Arts, and Basic Sciences. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates a detailed quantitative analysis of 50 EAP syllabuses provided by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. The syllabus analysis evaluates essential components such as course objectives, prerequisites, skills, teaching resources, methodologies, and evaluation practices, uncovering significant gaps in addressing field-specific needs and skill integration. Notable findings include an overemphasis on reading and writing, insufficient attention to speaking and listening skills, and a lack of flexibility in adapting to diverse classroom contexts. The qualitative data obtained from EAP instructors’ interviews further elucidates the practical challenges and adaptations made by educators to address syllabus shortcomings. Instructors emphasized the importance of incorporating field-specific tasks, modern teaching resources, interdisciplinary collaboration, and dynamic evaluation techniques to enhance EAP instruction. This study highlights the critical role of needs analysis in designing effective and responsive EAP syllabuses. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the current MSRT syllabuses, the research offers actionable recommendations for developing flexible, and field-specific EAP programs. These findings contribute to advancing EAP education in Iran, ensuring alignment with global academic and professional standards.
