Abstarct: The present study was an attempt to investigate visual representations in high school English textbooks. In this study, three English language textbooks belonging to the 10th, 11th and 12th grades of Iranian high schools were examined. The purpose of this study was to analyze and evaluate the visual representations in these books in order to identify their frequency and function. The selected textbooks were considered in terms of the number and type of visual representations. For the purpose of present study, a descxriptive analytical approach was used because this method allowed for a more detailed interpretation and analysis of visual representations in high school English textbooks. At first, three English language textbooks related to the 10th, 11th and 12th grades of Iranian high schools were selected for analysis. These books were examined in order to examine the frequency and function of visual representations in them. To answer the research question, data were collected by scanning textbooks. This scanning was done in order to identify and accurately analyze the visual features in the books. The data obtained in this way allowed a comprehensive and more detailed analysis of visual representations. Content analysis was performed baxsed on the typology of image functions according to Levin’s (1981) classification. This classification included five main categories: decorative, demonstrative, organizational, interpretive, and transformative. The findings showed significant changes in the function of images. In the first grade, decorative images faced the largest share, which has placed a lot of emphasis on the aesthetics and visual appeal of books to attract students' attention. Meanwhile, in the second and third grades, the share of decorative images decreased, which may indicate a shift in priorities towards educational content and other functions of images.
