Abstarct: Abstract Speaking proficiency has been explored from different perspectives but most of these studies seem to be experimental and quantitative. The field of second language teaching is in need of qualitative studies because they give voice to the stakeholders including teachers and learners. This study aims at giving voice to the test takers by exploring their comments on the speaking module of the IELTS. Following the principles of content analysis, a random sample of the test takers’ comments were selected from YouTube. Analysis revealed two major categories, criteria for effective speaking performance and signs of weak performance as the major categories. Effective performance was found to be dependent upon factors including accuracy, the use of cohesive devices, giving complete answers, fluency and confidence. Similarly, signs of weak performance were found to be too much hesitation, repetition, short answers and memorized answers. The findings of this qualitative study are useful for test takers, IELTS tutors and materials developers.
