Abstarct: ABSTRACT Active participation in the classroom holds significant importance as it fosters the development of oral communication skills and other crucial abilities, such as interaction and cooperation among students. By recognizing the need to explore effective methods to enhance active participation from teachers’ perspectives, this study aimed at conceptualizing language teachers’ perceptions of active participation, and turned the emerged categories into a questionnaire and finally established its reliability and validity using CFA and Cronbach's Alpha. Therefore, a grounded theory research method was utilized and purposive sampling was employed to select twelve qualified English teachers with a minimum of six years of teaching experience. Since this study consisted of both qualitative and quantitative phases, data collection involved semi-structured interviews for the qualitative stage and a questionnaire developed baxsed on the main themes identified during the interviews for the quantitative stage. Additionally, a digital voice recorder was used to ensure accurate data capture. Following data collection, the interviews were analyzed in line with grounded theory and MAXQDA 16 software was used for visualization. Then, confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. The results highlighted the crucial role that teachers play in motivating students to actively participate. Teachers perceived themselves as more responsible for student engagement compared to the students themselves. The instructional factors emerged as the most significant category, underscoring the importance of teachers’ role, responsibility, and skills as leaders in students’ learning journeys. Factors which both increased and decreased participation were found to be influenced by teachers’ role and actions. These findings emphasized the paramount role of teachers as conductors of the classroom, who must be aware of students’ emotions, abilities, differences, and needs to enhance their learning achievements through active participation.
