Abstarct: The recruitment of qualified English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers is fundamental to educational quality, yet the relationship between selection criteria and actual classroom readiness remains underexamined in post-conflict contexts such as Iraq, where centralized, score-baxsed recruitment systems predominate. This study investigated the alignment between formal EFL teacher recruitment criteria and professional readiness among newly hired teachers in Iraqi public secondary schools, specifically examining how teachers perceived the predictive validity of their recruitment experiences and what readiness gaps emerged during their transition to classroom practice. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, the study collected data through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) from 18 recently recruited EFL teachers across Baghdad, southern, and northern governorates of Iraq. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns in participants' lived experiences. Results revealed that 83.3% of participants perceived weak or very weak alignment between recruitment criteria and classroom demands. Recruitment processes prioritized academic content knowledge, linguistics, literature, while ignoring essential competencies such as classroom management (identified as critical by 94.4%), resource adaptation, and student engagement. All participants experienced reality shock during their first months of teaching. Significant regional, gender, and socio-economic inequities were documented in oral interview procedures. The study provided empirical evidence that Iraq's score-baxsed recruitment system fails to identify candidates with genuine professional readiness, necessitating holistic, competency-baxsed selection reforms to improve EFL teacher quality and educational outcomes.
