Abstarct: Universities are particularly crucial in preparing students for entrance into the society, due to their temporal location between individuals’ school time and social life. By the same token, an architecture faculty as responsible for training future architects should primarily offer a modeling environment with suitable spatial quality and efficient spatial interactions, and instigate the students’ creativity for the professional world through modern and effective training methods. Within the present paradigms of architecture, the participatory planning method for design is viewed as a new mechanism that encourages users’ cooperation and participation in planning the spaces they intend to use, in order to promote their sense of usefulness and belonging to those spaces, while at the same time lowering the costs for planning, executing and maintaining projects.
In order to analyze the participatory models in question, the design of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Development in Shahrood University was selected for study; the faculty did not possess a dedicated building since its foundation, and the educational conditions thereof presented numerous limitations for the students. This project studied the possible ways to enhance the architecture through participatory planning, and to identify the parameters considered by students and professors as effective in promoting the quality of educational space. For this purpose, the participatory planning trend in the world was taken to determine the factors effective in planning baxsed on participation, including levels of participation, as well as types and paradigms of participatory planning. The process required the identification of different grounds and factors effective in participatory planning, methods and instruments suitable for user participation, in order to determine the demands, objectives and values for the prospective users. Moreover, cases with similar participatory levels and paradigms were considered, and analyses were extracted to assist the selection of a suitable and efficient method for data collection. Out of the numerous models available for designing architecture faculties, a preferred model was chosen, so that its construction techniques, spatial relations and qualities could be used in designing. As the participation level in this project was limited to designing, and execution or maintenance were not included, the use of questionnaires and interviews was chosen as the data collection method; thus, questions commensurate with the knowledge of students and professors of architecture were designed and included in the questionnaires and interviews, the data was collected and managed using the SPSS Software, the findings were arranged in tables and graphs, and indicators for spatial design and design diagrams were obtained. After analyzing the collected data and reaching a general notion about the layout and design variables as preferred by users, the participation process was supplemented by interviews with professors of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Development, composed of three semi-structured questions. The results of these interviews were presented in tables, and analyzed to obtain design indicators and variables. Finally, after identifying general principles and standards for faculty design, considering climatic conditions of Shahrood, defining the desired design frxamework, and adapting them to the design parameters obtained from data analysis, a model was designed for the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Development in Shahrood University.
