Abstarct: The present study aimed to examine the effect of work values on job engagement among physical education teachers and the moderating role of job burnout. The research method was descxriptive–correlational, applied in terms of purpose, and cross-sectional in terms of time, and was conducted as a field study using three questionnaires: the 15-item Work Values Questionnaire developed by Shahri (2013), the 9-item Work Engagement Questionnaire by Schaufeli et al. (2006), and the 23-item Maslach Burnout Questionnaire for physical education teachers (1996). The validity of the questionnaires was reviewed and confirmed by 10 subject-matter experts. Given that the questionnaires were baxsed on a Likert scale, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to assess reliability; all variables obtained values higher than 0.70, indicating acceptable reliability.
The statistical population consisted of physical education teachers in Iraqi schools, from whom 285 participants were selected as the research sample using Klein’s (2000) sample size determination method and convenience sampling. Descxriptive statistics were used to organize, summarize, and classify raw scores and to describe sample characteristics, while inferential analyses (structural equation modeling, path analysis, and hypothesis testing) were employed to examine the relationships among variables. Smart-PLS 3 and SPSS 22 software were used to conduct the analyses.
The results showed that work values had a direct and positive effect on teachers’ job engagement (path coefficient = 0.524, t-value = 6.639), such that increases in work values led to higher levels of teachers’ motivation, commitment, and job energy. Furthermore, path analysis indicated that job burnout played a significant moderating role in the relationship between work values and job engagement; the path coefficient (0.224) and t-value (3.357), exceeding the critical value, supported the rejection of the null hypothesis and the confirmation of the research hypothesis.
The findings suggest that school administrators and educational authorities in Iraq should pay particular attention to strengthening work values and reducing job burnout in order to enhance job engagement among physical education teachers. Designing supportive programs, providing training in emotional regulation skills, and offering opportunities for professional development can create a motivating and healthy work environment and facilitate improvements in students’ educational performance.
