GV272 : The effect of perceived social support on the academic motivation of physical education students with the mediating role of emotional intelligence

Abstarct: Abestract The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of perceived social support on the academic motivation of physical education students with the mediator role of emotional intelligence. The method of the current research was descxriptive-correlational in nature and cross-sectional in terms of time. The statistical population of the research was all physical education students of Shahrood University of Technology. The number of the statistical community was 320. The sampling method was available and the number of samples in this research was baxsed on the theory of Klein (1994) according to the number of questions in the questionnaires (68 items) and with an estimate of at least 2 times and at most 10 times the number of questions between 136 and 680. It was estimated, finally, 210 questionnaires were analyzed out of 230 research samples. The research tools were three standard social support questionnaires by Zimmet et al. (1988), emotional intelligence questionnaire by Bradbury and Graves (2004) and student academic motivation questionnaire by Wallerand et al. (1992). The face and content validity of the questionnaires was confirmed by the opinion of social support, emotional intelligence and academic motivation, respectively (Cronbach's alpha: 0.85, 0.77, 0.80) (composite reliability: 93 0.0, 0.78 and 0.82) were reported. In order to analyze the data, structural equation modeling, confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis and SPSS V25 and Smart PLS.3 software were used. The results of the research data analysis showed that perceived social support has an effect on emotional intelligence. And the academic motivation of students has a positive and meaningful effect. Also, emotional intelligence has a positive and significant effect on academic motivation. The mediating role of emotional intelligence was also confirmed in the relationship between perceived social support and academic motivation. Therefore, effective support from the family and the community can be useful for raising the emotional intelligence and academic motivation of students, and as a result, they can play an effective role in the growth and development of society.
