Each year, Nature Index ranks universities and institutes of higher education in the world baxsed on their high quality research output. The purpose of this ranking system is to identify different countries and their institutions of higher education baxsed on their high quality research publications, the data for which is gathered from 83 indexed journals. The rankings system is baxsed on three key measures of merit:
- Article Count (AC) takes into account the number of articles published by authors affiliated with the universities and institutions, regardless of the numbers of authors for the articles.
- Fractional Count (FC) takes into account the contributions of universities and institutions of higher education to the articles published in the 82 journals which are tracked by the index, as it calculates the percentage of affiliated authors from an institution or country.
- Weighted Fractional Count (WFC) applies a weighting to the Fractional Count to control the over-representation of articles in fields such as astronomy and astrophysics, due to the high number of publications in these disciplines. Therefore, although the data for these disciplines are compiled in the same way as for all others, articles from these journals are assigned one-fifth the weight of other articles.
