In recent years, due to environmental issues, the use of non-toxic inhibitors has increased. In this research, using weight loss, electrochemical impedance and polarization tests, the inhibitory effect of Zataria multiflora extract was investigated for managing the use of 1 M hydrochloric acid environment. Further, using atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope, the inhibitory effect of Zataria multiflora extract on copper corrosion was also investigated. The weight loss results showed that with the increase of the inhibitor, the corrosion rate decreases from 18.30 mils per year to 4.31 mils per year. The analysis of the impedance test showed that by increasing the essential oil of Zataria multiflora up to 100 mg/lit, the value of polarization resistance increased up to 1038 Ω/cm2, which indicates the reduction of corrosion of the copper sample. Also, the results of the electrochemical impedance diagrams show that by increasing the inhibitor in the acidic solution, the amount of breakage decreased and the inhibition improved to 83.62%. Adsorption surface active sites of indole baxse compounds determined using quantum chemistry calculations and their performance compared to expts. The images of the atomic force microscope test showed a decrease in the surface roughness of the samples, so that in the sample immersed in the solution without inhibitor, the surface roughness was 0.1856 nm, and in the sample immersed in the solution containing 100 mg/lit of the inhibitor, the surface roughness was 732.2 nm. The scanning electron microscope images also investigated the useful performance of this inhibitor in reducing the corrosion rate of copper in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution.
