Abstarct: Application of satellite image processing and information laxyer integration in Geological Information System has been increased in most of the studies in earth science. There have been performed such studies with application of remote sensing in some fields like as underground water exploration and landfill studies. However, the majority of these studies were used in karstic or lithic media rather than in porous media with sediments cover. The Bastam drainage regoin is among the most water demanded area in Notheast part of Iran, Shahrood, that many geophysical studies have been performed there. However, none of those studies have been used remote sensing technique as a tool for underground water exploration. In this study, this technique is used in geological information system for that purpose.
In this study, some needed information, like as satellite image, digital topography and geology maps were obtained from different sources. Then, conventional processing steps, like as false color composite generation, band relating images, principal component analysis and image filtration have been performed on the data. Then, relating parameter to the target of the study have been extracted from the results. These parameters are lithology and sediment units, lineaments like as fractures and faults, topography and botanic cover of the area. These parameters were obtained as information laxyers.
Then these information laxyers were used for laxyer integration by different methods. These laxyers were weighted according to their importance for the purpose of the study. To obtain the map of the intrinsic unites and to define the best method for obtaining such units, sum weighting method, phases methods like as gamma, algebraic multiplication and algebraic summation. The result of these methods obtained the map of intrinsic units for underground water exploration.
In the final step, information from several wells were used for model verification. The results shows that 95% of the wells were drilled in those units. This study proves application of remote sensing technique for underground water exploration.
