Abstarct: Soil is one of the first environmental media that absorbs and substantially accumulates the chemical pesticides in its texture. Therefore, investigating the concentration, the behavior and the fate of these types of pollutants in the soil is very critical. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the concentration, distribution, health and ecological risks of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in the cultivated soils of Mojen Plain (NW Shahrood). Fifteen representative soil samples were randomly collected from the agricultural lands across the area. The levels of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in the soil samples were measured by HPLC-UV with reliable accuracy and precision. The obtained results showed the high levels of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides (ΣOPP=211 ppb, ΣOCP=233 ppb) in the soil samples, particularly due to low irrigation, high rate of application and low solubility of pesticides in the soils. baxsed on the correlation analysis, it was revealed that some organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides are meaningfully correlated with soil organic matter indicating the role of this physicochemical parameter in the absorption and retention of chemical pesticides in the soils of the study area. The carcinogenic risk of Heptachlor and Endrin is found higher for children than adults and among the three exposure routes, ingestion plays a greater role in the risk of cancer for both age groups. The total lifetime carcinogenic risk for both age groups and for both studied pesticides was considered acceptable or negligible. By comparing the levels of the studied pesticides with the standard limits of the residual concentration in China, it was found that 14 out of the soil sampling sites fall within the non-contaminated category. Calculating the ecological risk quotient (RQ) also indicated that the soil samples in 14 sites are in the medium risk category for both organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, and site no 1 exceptionally falls in the high-risk pollution zone. Among the studied organophosphorus pesticides and the organochlorine pesticides, Beta-minophos and Endosulfan, respectively, have the largest contribution in posing ecological risk to soil microorganisms.
