Abstarct: Xanthenes are important classes of biodynamic heterocycles because of their wide range of therapeutic and biological properties, for example antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activity. Synthetic methods for xanthenes, have limitations such as, long reaction time, harsh reaction conditions and often expensive catalysts. Moreover, the synthesis has been usually carried out in solvent leading to complex isolation and recovery procedures. We were synthesized xanthenes and thioxanthenes by one pot three-component reaction of naphthalene-2-ol or its thiol derivative, aromatic aldehydes, and dimedone or 1,3-cyclohexandione, in the presence of boehmite nanoparticles as reusable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. Optimum condition was resulted by 10 mol% of catalyst and 140 ̊C (120 ̊C for thioxanthene). Products were characterized by using m.p, IR, and 1H NMR spectra.
