Walking has garnered significant attention as a key activity in improving urban environmental quality and enhancing citizen health. This activity not only contributes to reducing traffic and pollution but also increases social interactions in public spaces. Complete streets, featuring elements such as wide sidewalks, bike lanes, green spaces, and seating areas, provide safety and comfort for all users. Such designs create a pleasant environment for social interactions and enhance feelings of security and comfort. Consequently, focusing on the design of complete streets plays a vital role in improving urban quality of life and boosting social interactions.
In this research, the methodology is both quantitative and qualitative, and the study area is Shariati Street in the city of Babol. Qualitative data has been collected through searches in various databaxses, while quantitative data has been gathered through field surveys and direct observations. The statistical population of this study includes both residents and non-residents of the study area, with sampling conducted randomly. baxsed on Cochran's formula, the sample size for this research has been determined to be 384 individuals. The reliability of the questionnaires has been confirmed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, while content validity has been validated by experts in the field. In this study, descxriptive and inferential statistical approaches (structural equation modeling) have been employed for data analysis, utilizing SPSS 27 and PLS 3 software. The results obtained from data analysis using the software indicate that the quality of the physical environment has a positive and significant impact on both walking and social interactions. The path coefficient of 0.498 and a t-statistic of 13.434 demonstrate a positive and significant effect of the quality of the physical environment on social interactions. Additionally, the path coefficient of 0.434 and a t-statistic of 10.189 indicate a positive and significant effect of environmental quality on walking. These findings indicate that high-quality environments can encourage individuals to walk more. Walking also has a positive and significant impact on social interactions, with a path coefficient of 0.285 and a t-statistic of 6.787. Furthermore, walking serves as a mediating variable in the relationship between the quality of the physical environment and social interactions, showing a positive and significant effect with a path coefficient of 0.124 and a t-statistic of 5.794. Thus, the results of this research suggest that the quality of the physical environment not only directly influences walking and social interactions but also has an indirect effect by increasing walking activities. Therefore, improving the quality of urban environments can enhance social interactions and walking activities. Additionally, these findings can serve as a basis for designing and improving public and urban spaces to enhance the quality of life for citizens. Finally, baxsed on the research results, recommendations have been made to improve the conditions in the studied area.
