Abstarct: This research project is geared toward exploring relations between the pile behavior and CPT results. Given that multiple real tests may not be performed on piles due to the relevant high costs, many researchers have tried to develop numerical models of piles and CPT in order to simulate the pile behavior. To this aim, some simplifying assumptions have been made in addition to development of a constitutive model. The problem of cone penetration has been analyzed by models baxsed on the finite element method. The first computations were made using small-strain formulations. However, the results were not satisfactory owing to excessive element distortions encountered during pile installation and CPT. Later, large-strain formulations were introduced, which made use of the Eulerean, ALE and CEL mesh descxriptions. The basic definitions and procedures used for numerical modeling of pile installation and CPT are covered in this study, while merits and demerits of various mesh definitions in the non-linear finite element method are initially discussed in detail. Then, the cone penetration, initial stress and material parameters are explained in order to get a better insight into the numerical modeling of cone penetration. Finally, various researches on the topic have been reviewed while the assumptions made in each case have been explained. Some recommendations are also presented with respect to the selection of the best simplifying assumptions for to the soil characteristics, element types, mesh descxription and material parameters in order to obtain the best results which are in agreement with the results of model tests on the piles.
