Abstarct: Silicon carbide coatings have attracted much attention in recent years due to unique properties including high hardness and young’s modulus high corrosion resistance and proper electrical properties. One of the simplest method to prepare SiC coating is sol-gel method. In this research three different kinds of sol-gel processing method was used to prepare SiC coating on alumina substrate including sol-gel, composite sol-gel and impregnation sol-gel. Polycarbosilane was used as a starting material for preparation of sic thin laxyers. The mechanical properties coating was studied by nanoindentation method. The electrical conductivity was measured and the spark characteristics of coating was also evaluated. The microstructure and phase were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. The maximum hardness was 18.5 GPa. It was found that the presence of Al2O3 in coating has improved adhesion of coating to substrate. All samples showed good spark and mechanical wear resistance. It was also found that the optimum temperature for sic coating was 1200oC.
