Abstarct: Designing and implementing the maintenence system is one of the most important topic in tunneling process. Appropriate accordance of the maintenance system with the medium condition could be increase significantly the performance of these barrier system. One of the common approach for excavating a tunnel in urban area is the shield driven tunneling. One of the most important feature of this method of excavation is setuping the maintanence system while the excavation is running. The process of designing the segmental lining follows by an iterative procedure. Where,at first, the designers chooses the design parameter of segmental lining, then the behavior of it would be evaluate againsed the imposed load. If these dimentions of design pattern satisfies the constrains, the structure would be design baxsed on the related guidelines. If these circumestances do not satisfied the designer would be reformed the design parameters and controlles the design constrains again. This procedure would be stop when all the constrains satisfied and acceptable solution obtained. Thus, the procedure of optimum design need more time and majorely relates on the ability and experiment of the designer. Using of optimization algorithms usually considered as an alternative solution in order to reach the optimum design parameter in this kind of problem. The aim of optimizing the structures Is finding the appropriate design variables of a system in which the cost is minimum, and all the various constrains related to the design of structure satisfies. In this thesis an algorithm has been presented for optimizing the design of segmental lining. In this way, the simulation algorithm of the segmental lining has been blended to the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Imperialist Competetive Algorithm (ICA) algorithms, as an optimization algorithms, to obtain the optimum design pattern of segmental lining regarding to the design constrains presented by the International Tunnelling Assosiation (ITA) as well as the American Concrete Institute (ACI). In the simulation algorithm with using the Force Method equation the imposed internal forces have calculated regarding to the joints of segment. Then, the best composite of design variables for satisfying the design constrains have been presented by using the PSO and ICA algorithms. In this research the width of segment, the thickness of segment, number and diameter of the bolts used for connecting the piece of segment and the diameter of stirrups have considered as the design variables. The obtained results shows that the cost of designing and implementing of Mashhad urban tunnel line 2 is 12.6 and 14 percent per meter lower than the design pattern, which is recommended by consulting company, by using of the PSO and ICA algorithms, respectively. The results reveals that the ICA algorithm because of its powerful ability to search the new condition of design variables as well as its ability to run away from the local minimum, has a better result in this kind of problem.
