Abstarct: One of the wain activities associated with mining excavation is blasting operation. In designing step of drilling & blasting pattern lack of detailed information can result in poor achievement in predefined purposes. In an optimum blasting pattern, both of the uncontrollable and controllable factors should be taken into consideration simultaneously. Local geological condition, rock mass quality, pattern geometry, loading and transportation of equipment, type of delivery system and explosion should be considered by the designers. Often, designing patterns are baxsed on the empirical methods. These methods are usually used with many simplifications and assumptions resulted in reducing the efficiency of the system. In this study, a comprehensive study has been done on the relevant contexts an the most effective parameters in the blasting pattern design, mainly those ones which relay on the mass rock properties, are reviewed. After, various blasting poperations in the Sangan iron ore mine, existed problems recognized and some recommendations have been offered to improve the current condition of the blasting operations. To collect the required data, a field study has been taken into account and rock mass engineering specifications required to determine the blast ability index (BI) and rock fragmentation index (RFI) in more than thirteen point of Sangan iron ore mine were studied. Point load, density and hardness tests have been carreid out on the samples which were collected. The mechanical properties of intact rock, geo-mechanical characteristics of rock mass, blast ability index and rock fragmentation index were determined for the rock masses located on those mentioned points. Then, utilizing the parameters obtained, specific charge was determined. At the end, the result of rock mass baxsed methods were compared with those designed by the mine experts.
