Abstarct: Abstract Red mud is an important solid waste with strong alkalin property that is obtained during the extraction of alumina in the Bayer process. The global reserve of red mud is more than 4 billion tons and its disposal as a solid waste has always been a serious environmental problem. Red mud is reddish brown because of its high content of iron oxide. This waste is considered a potential source due to its high content of valuable mextal compounds including iron. In this research, reduction roasting as a method of extracting iron in red mud, the feasibility of reduction methods and the main influencing factors has been investigated. These processes of investigating include reduction in muffle and tube furnaces and studying temperature, reduction agent, type of additives and gas as factors. Under the optimal conditions of reduction roasting in a tube furnace for a mixture of red mud with graphite, with argon gas, 1000 ֯C temperature, 60 minutes duration of reduction, magnetization saturation was obtained 38.205 emu/g. Also, the achieved results have been optimized by Design Expert software. The optimization conditions were at 1000 ֯C temperature with Argon gas and mixture of red mud with graphite which obtained 37.77 emu/g magnetization saturation.
