Abstarct: Executing drilling operations to explore, develop and exploit oil and gas reservoirs and create injection wells plays a vital role in the oil industry, and in this matter, producing and improving the properties of drilling mud is of particular importance. Various additives and chemical modifiers such as minerals, polymers and nanoparticles can be used to improve the properties of drilling mud. In this project, the effect of utilizing nanoparticles and polymer to reduce the water absorption of viscosifiers used in the production of drilling mud was investigated in laboratory scale. For this purpose, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer, talc nanoparticles, and silica nanoparticles were prepared and FTIR analysis was performed to identify and confirm the structure of the particles. Then, the effect of adding the mentioned materials to the water-baxsed mud was discussed and investigated. The rheological behavior of mud was determined using Viscometer Fan (Viscometer (355A) FANN) and Filter Press (API Filter Press (300 LPLT), OFFIT). The results of comparative analyses show that silica nanoparticles, talc nanoparticles, and SBS polymer are effective in increasing the viscosity of drilling fluid by about 38%, 69%, and 138%, respectively. Moreover, by adding these materials to the drilling fluid, the amount of water loss was significantly reduced. The results implied that by adding silica nanoparticles, talc nanoparticles, and SBS polymer, the amount of water loss decreased by 13%, 26%, and 28%, respectively. Nanoparticles decreased the thickness of mud cake by 27%, 36% respectively and polymer increased by 19%. also increased the yield point by about 70%, 50% and 105%, respectively, and did not noticeably affect drilling mud weight and pH,
