Abstarct: Nowadays control of the fractional order systems has attracted considerable attentions due to their applications and the existence of uncertainities. The most popular method to implement and simulate fractional order transfer functions is to approximate them with integer order transfer functions, which is presented in this work. Some methods in designing fractional order PID controllers are presented then. This particular kind of controller is taken into attention. In this dissertation the method, tuning using evolutionary algorithms, is used to design fractional order PID controllers to control fractional order, integer order and time delayed plants. A novel Memetic Algorithm (MA) baxsed on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and by use of fractional order differentiations concept is proposed by then. To show the performance and efficiency of the proposed MA and the designing method used, a comparison between is presented.
