Abstarct: Nowadays by increasing transportation, solutions for improving the traffic are more needed. Roundabout is one of these solutions that will help to improve the traffic in intersections by regulating the traffic. Different geometric designs for roundabouts were introduced by researchers. Some of these designs are modern, turbo and elliptical roundabout. Despite high utilization of elliptical roundabouts in Iran, there is lack of detailed studies on the behavior of these roundabouts. The main objective of this study is to investigate the performance of elliptical roundabout in unsignalized and signalized controls. In this regard, this roundabout was compared with modern and turbo roundabouts in AIMSUN simulation software. Some of the geometric characteristics of these simulations are constant (such as width of lanes in circular roadway and streets, length of streets, entry radius and speed limit in streets) and some of them are variable (such as radius of central island, speed limit in circular roadway and number of lanes). Roundabouts (modern, turbo and elliptical) were compared in three categories; single lane, two lane and three lane. In each category three speed limits for circular roadway (25, 35 and 40 km/hr) were assumed (except for single lane category with two speed limits, 25 and 35 km/hr). Also three different central island radii (different in each category) with two different controls (unsignalized and signalized) were considered in each category. After designing the roundabouts, results (delay time and capacity) were analyzed under saturated and unsaturated flow conditions. baxsed on the obtained results, the performance of elliptical roundabout was similar to modern roundabout. In specific situations, elliptical roundabout had the best performance in all types of roundabouts. In saturated flow conditions and in two-lane and three-lane categories, elliptical roundabout performed better than other roundabouts. This performance was more effective in signalized control.
