Abstarct: Desertification that means land degradation in arid and semi-arid areas is currently one of the most serious problems of the international community. The area of southeast Zahedan with hot and dry climate, poor vegetation cover and exposing to strong winds is highly prone to desertification. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of desertification in Southeast Zahedan using IMDPA model, which is suitable for dry and semi-arid conditions of Iran country. Due to the uniform geology of the study area geomorphology facies were considered as working units to assess desertification criteria and indicators. Following investigation of the study area four criteria including climate, soil, vegetation and wind erosion along with their 14 indicators were selected to assess the intensity of desertification in working units. baxsed on the results, drought, the number of storm days, rainfall and soil depth indices have the most important role in increasing intensity of desertification in the study area. The indicators of vegetation recovery, percent and status of vegetation, soil electrical conductivity, intensity of wind erosion and utilization from vegetation were grouped in the next rank. The other indicators such as drought continuity and the percent of surficial and deep rock fragments had minimal impacts on the intensity of desertification of the study area. Among the studied criteria, the climate has the most important role in desertification, which highlights the major impact of natural desertification of the study area. Vegetation, soil and wind erosion criteria, respectively, are placed in the next ranks. The value of intensity of desertification in the Southeast Zahedan was assessed to be 3.12, which indicates high class of desertification. The results showed 23.39% of the study area (including rock-mass working unit and residential areas) locate in low class, 5.75% in medium class, 61.69% in high class and 9.17% in very high (sever) class of intensity of desertification.
