Abstarct: More than 20 active hot water springs have been recognized in Meshkin-shahr 1:100,000 geological map. Thus, considering the presence of volcanic activities and hot water springs, the area has a favorable potential for geothermal resources. The aim of this research is to recognize and introduce sub-areas in the area that possess higher geothermal potential. Application of usual methods for exploration of geothermal resources such as gravity, magnetic and geological methods have some limitations. Hence, to present a suitable model or pattern for geothermal favorable potential map, we have used the integration of usual and modern exploration methods using geographic information system (GIS). To provide a data baxse for the area, we digitize the all maps and information, prepared by Iranian and foreign companies. These data and information were divided in to three surfaces (geology, alteration and geochemistry), subsurface (gravity, magnetic and micro seismic methods) and structural subsets. To obtain the alteration map of the area, we used Landsat image 7. Also, processing of stream sediment geochemical data was carried out using zonality map. Furthermore residual gravity anomaly map, prepared by Tehran-Berkley Company was digitized. In addition to this map, magnetic first-vertical derivative, micro seismic and structural maps added to the databaxse. Finally, modeling and integration of exploration data were made using weights of evidence and logistic regression methods with the help of ArcGis10 software. Different potential maps were generated. baxsed on the results, four sub-areas were recognized as high geothermal potential areas in which further exploration should be followed. Considering the cost of magnetotelluric (MT) surveys and deep exploration drilling, validation of the geothermal potential map was made using MT surveys and drilled wells in northwest of Sabalan and Bushli. The results imply that the presented geothermal potential model can play an important role in optimal locations of MT profiles. The first exploration priority was assigned to northwest of Sabalan, in which a geothermal power station and several drilled wells have been established. The second preference was Bushli area. The third preference area was doubted to have deep geothermal anomaly, finally the fourth priority area was determined to be north of Sarab although was recognized as a poor potential geothermal anomaly. Thus, it was recommended to perform a limited number of MT soundings, and results to be compared and if results suggest drilling to be made in some location in the area.
