Abstarct: The aims of the present study are to investigate concentration of heavy mextals in street dusts of Gorgan, determine the source of the elements, and assess the risk to human health. For these purposes, 30 street dust samples were collected from the high-traffic main streets, and residential, industrial, and service areas. The concentrations of major and minor elements were measured by ICP-MS instrument and the obtained data were analyzed using statistical methods and geochemical indices. The average concentration of studied elements decreases as follows: Al> Fe> Ti> Mn> Zn> Cu> Zr> Cr> V> Pb> Ni> As> Sn> Co> Sc> Sb> Cd. The street dust samples are significantly enriched with Pb, Sn, Sb, Cu, Cd, As and Zn; and the most polluted samples are those collected from commercial and service areas. The human health risk assessment shows that in some sampling stations, regarding the HQ > 1, there is a non-carcinogenic risk of arsenic through the ingestion route especially for children. There is also a carcinogenesis risk of Cr, As, and Ni (for children) and of Ni (for adults) through the ingestion route. The statistical analysis of the analytical data showed that the Al, Sc, Ti, V and Zr are from natural sources, Mn, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni and Cd originate from both natural and anthropogenic origins, while Cu, Sb, Sn, Pb, As and Zn originate from man-made sources, namely traffic (fuel combustion, corrosion and erosion of steel alloys, car tires, lubricating oils, galvanized parts and chrome plating, erosion of bearings, electric cables) and industrial activities. In conclusion, the street dust of the study area contains significant amounts of heavy mextals, which may induce negative health impacts on the residents, especially on children’s health.
